7 fantastic Cyber Monday 4K Blu-ray deals we will be buying

We love streaming movies. But a disc gets you a superior experience because it’s not subject to the same sort of compression, which can kill the picture in dark scenes in particular.

Did you know that a 4K Blu-ray can hold between 50GB and 10GB of data? Imagine if each film you watched sucked up 100GB of bandwidth. The internet ISPs would have a heart attack.

Anyway, we think some of the classics are worth keeping in disc form. And you can get some of those classics on the cheap as part of this year’s Black Friday sales. Here are some of our top picks.

Lord of the Rings trilogy
This 4K remaster of the Lord of the Rings movies was released in 2020 and, well, it’s a bit contentious among fans. Some of the picture is fiddled with a bit much according to some, as is the colour tone. However, it does include both the theatrical and extended cuts, and has tonnes more details than the DVD-quality images that may make up your LoTR memories.

Mission: Impossible Six movie collection
This film collection is no longer up-to-date, thanks to 2023’s Dead Reckoning Part One. However, you can’t end a box set with something called “part one” so we’re probably looking at 2025-2026 until it’s fixed. They’re all a cracking watch *cough* apart from Mission Impossible II *cough*. Each film comes with two discs, aside from the 3-disc Fallout loaded with bonus features.

Flash Gordon 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition
Some movies are undeniably special even if they aren’t all that good by the classic film critic measures. Flash Gordon is THE classic example. This collector’s edition goes deliciously overboard, including five discs packed with extras features, multiple commentaries, two booklets, four art cards, a sew-on patch and soundtrack CD.

The Last of Us Season 1
If you want to truly see The Last of Us in all its grim glory you need the 4K blu-ray of the show. It retains much greater dynamic range in the image and audio than the streamed version. You can also pay £8 more if you want the steel book version, which has its own very distinctive illustrated cover.

The Matrix Trilogy
Sure, The Matrix Blu-rays may be charity shop fodder at this point but the original trio of films are still worth re-experiencing in 4K. It’s now an HDR transfer, and the negatives were rescanned to bring out the greatest amount of detail. This is no lazy upscale, although - sure - some effects shots did have to simply be upscaled.

The Godfather Collection
You’ll typically pay £70 for this set, which includes the three original The Godfather movies. Who knew these classics could be appreciated with HDR with wide colour gamut support? This set was only released in 2022, and features loads of extras including info on the preservation process.

Jurassic World Ultimate Collection
This box set includes the whole kaboodle. That’s the three original Jurassic Park movies and the more contentious Jurassic Park World trilogy, all in 4K (and 1080p Blu-ray). The two sides offer the best of film-making and the technical side. Jurassic Park is the best movie by far, of course, while the most recent Jurassic Park World instalments are available in Dolby Vision, for a true tech showcase.
